SG-13.JPGDamage at LZ Incoming250 viewsLoss of memory on this day. I do recall faintly that this gun took a recoilless round to the right wheel. I think the Gunner was seriously hurt or killed.
SG-12.JPGThe 105mm is a casualty235 viewsOne of our howitzers became a casualty...it was either mortars or a recoilless rifle.
SG-Clip_1.jpgYes...we got "swapped"230 viewsThis clipping clearly delineates the events that occurred to the 3rd Brigade...often called "the Bastard Brigade" after its arrival in Nam. This clipping has been added to the Mighty Ninth Homepage as documentation for the uninformed or the misinformed. The brigades were not re-joined with their respective Divisions; the men were told to swap out their right shoulder patches.
SG-9.JPGSteve & Caesar - FDC guys216 viewsMe and George "Caesar" Skulzachek, FDC mates. Kept searching for George after Vietnam without success. Finally learned that he passed away.
SG-15.JPGLZ Mile High208 viewsWe moved to LZ Mile High. That is LZ Incoming in the background---the bald spot on the hill. The "Daisy Cutter" bomb that cleared this site left us some serious challenges to make a home! Would have killed for a chain saw.
Modern-Day_Steve.JPGModern Day203 viewsModern-day Steve Gorecki. He wears a different kind of helmet these days.
Reminds us of the book: "We Were Young...and Soldiers". With emphasis, of course, on "were".
SG-16.JPGThe FDC Monolith200 viewsWe could not dig down, so we had to go up with the FDC CONEX. On the left is Loy & Beringer. The trees that were left were hard as steel. Had to live around them. This firebase was quite compact.
SG-18.JPGLZ Mile High199 viewsBird's eye view of LZ Mile High taken from the top of the FDC CONEX. Big mess tent in the background! Also, that really cool radar that allowed us to plot 8-place coordinate grids on the Cong & NVA.
SG-17.JPGBeringer & Me195 viewsPete Beringer and yours truly. The FDC Bunker was a sight to behold. Luckily, we never got hit!
SG-11.JPGNothing grows on LZ Incoming?194 viewsThis is a "gook's view" of LZ Incoming from the south. I braved the snipers & mortars to get water from the big bladder that was sitting out about 200ft out of the perimeter. Anyone wonder why there was NOT a stick of vegetation on this firebase? "Orange"-something ring a bell?
SG-21.JPGSkull & Shades192 viewsSomewhere along the line one of the "locals" lost his head.
Only to have it reappear on our Flag "Standard"
SG-7.JPGRelocation at LZ Incoming187 viewsGetting settled at LZ Incoming. Lt George is in the center.
