SG-Clip_1.jpgYes...we got "swapped"This clipping clearly delineates the events that occurred to the 3rd Brigade...often called "the Bastard Brigade" after its arrival in Nam. This clipping has been added to the Mighty Ninth Homepage as documentation for the uninformed or the misinformed. The brigades were not re-joined with their respective Divisions; the men were told to swap out their right shoulder patches.

SG-16.JPGThe FDC MonolithWe could not dig down, so we had to go up with the FDC CONEX. On the left is Loy & Beringer. The trees that were left were hard as steel. Had to live around them. This firebase was quite compact.

SG-12.JPGThe 105mm is a casualtyOne of our howitzers became a casualty...it was either mortars or a recoilless rifle.

SG-28.JPGTaking a break on LZ MeadeThe FDC crew taking a well-deserved break in front of the FDC bunker. From Left to Right: Pete Beringer, Greg Malnar, Lou Onarato, Jimmy Loy, Mickey Mattocks.

SG-9.JPGSteve & Caesar - FDC guysMe and George "Caesar" Skulzachek, FDC mates. Kept searching for George after Vietnam without success. Finally learned that he passed away.

SG-24.JPGSpare TubeHere I am sitting on a spare tube for the 175mm gun. Due to their compression and long-distance firing, the tubes didn't last very long.

SG-21.JPGSkull & ShadesSomewhere along the line one of the "locals" lost his head.
Only to have it reappear on our Flag "Standard"

SG-14.JPGSandbags do work! This photo is living proof that sandbags saved lives. These three (3) layers of sandbags stopped a mortar round on the top of the FDC CONEX roof. We had to clean our pants after that hit.

SG-7.JPGRelocation at LZ IncomingGetting settled at LZ Incoming. Lt George is in the center.

SG-27.JPGRe-visiting Iwo Jima? The FDC crew was attempting to be clever in duplicating the flag-raising on Iwo Jima. It was actually the raising of a R-292 antenna. Can't communicate without it. Smiling Greg Malnar on the left leading the event. Great place for a sniper on the hill behind. We did not stay there long enough for anyone to figure that out thankfully.

SG-4.JPGPhu Cat AirbaseHere we are at Phu Cat AFB the day we flew into Kontum. I'm in the center; forgotten the name of the FDC guy on my left.

SG-11.JPGNothing grows on LZ Incoming? This is a "gook's view" of LZ Incoming from the south. I braved the snipers & mortars to get water from the big bladder that was sitting out about 200ft out of the perimeter. Anyone wonder why there was NOT a stick of vegetation on this firebase? "Orange"-something ring a bell?
