Strive To Reach The Summit

JCook-105.JPGWhy we called them "Shit-Hooks"A CH-47 was called a "Chinook". They were powerful utility helicopters. A cloud of dust and a heigh-ho Silver...away....away...away with everything that wasn't tied down. Don't mess with a Chinook; you can't win. The downdraft of the blades has to be seen to appreciate the power. It was not uncommon to run away when you saw a Chinook coming in.

JCook-137.JPGWhere is the drain plug?Lousy RSOP. We moved into this LZ the night before and it rained. Here's what we were greeted with the next morning. The gun spade of the base piece got stuck in the mud and we couldn't fire. We moved out of here.

JCook-138.JPGWet LZGuess no one looked at the elevation of the LZ or how rainwater was supposed to drain off.

JCook22d.JPGUnderground Bunker - the orginal CONEX FDC conceptThe next change for our FDC operations was CONEX containers. We buried two (2) CONEX containers in Base Camp. They were dug in with the help of a bulldozer. They were facing each other, dropped into the hole and covered with sandbags. We made a "sandbag staircase" to get back to the surface. I don't know how this would work out in monsoon season. Inside the containers, we used red lights at night and white lights during the day. We moved in our standard field tables for the charts and placed the radios on ammo boxes.

JCook12.jpgTriple-DippleHere is a CH-47 lifting a water buffalo and three (not two) brass casing Packs. We had a miscommunication -- and the pilot thought he had two casing Packs. So he dragged the bottom pack through our Battery and we lucky no damage to us or to him.
